American Idol – I have the courage to try – at least in dreams

Updated on September 1, 2019

I believe I can fly

The story and poem of a young singer’s desire and journey to sing in a school talent show and desire to one day sing on American Idol.

Prince Charming

For years, every Wednesday I would pick up my two grandsons and take them to my house for a couple of hours, and on the way to my house, we would sing, making up the songs on the way.

Zane my youngest grandson was the one who liked to sing, and I will always remember. He was about five years old and, one day when he stood on my cocktail table with my microphone in his hand and proclaimed: “I’m going to be a rock star, and change my name to Rocky!” I laughed and told him that I like Zane better. He said then I won’t change my name, and proceeded to sing I believe I can fly. I don't know if the words were the same ones written by the song writer, but if they were not I just wish he could have heard Zane's rendition.

Zane came home from school and asked his dad

Do you know? I want to be in a talent show.

And I really want to know if you would go.

His dad said, son, I did not even know that you could sing

Then come and watch me do my thing

To sing before my whole school is my biggest dream

As he walked out on the stage, you’d think he was the king

When all the little girls began to yell and scream

Singing in the talent show

Zane had realized his biggest dream, got his Honor Society certificate, graduated grammar school and middle school and went to high school where he joined the Coffee House Choir. And, many times a year we went to hear him sing, in musical plays.

The poem in fiction

Zane arrived on the scene

On American Idol to fulfill his dream

And came face to face with thousands of contestants

And most of them with guitars

He thought, are we not here to sing?

As he heard another guitar pling

Where everyone is here to do their own thing

And one by one they left the scene

Just before they put him in the box

To wait for the audition knock

Zane fell down on my knees

Praying God, please, please

Singing in front of these three

He was nervous as could be

To stand before Harry, Keith, J-lo and sing

Is his greatest dream

Then came the knock, and it was fine

Zane stood there and sang his lines

As they said in unison

Sorry baby, not this time

But, you don’t understand

To sing in front of the three of you

Has been my greatest dream

Please give me one more try I ask of you

Then, knock, knock, knock

Zane awoke with a sigh

Could that be for one more try

With another sigh he looked at the clock

Zane, if you don’t get up

You will be late for school

Sorry to wake you from your American Idol Dream

But first you must learn the golden rule.

Did Zane become a singer/musician? You asked!

Yes! I also hear that Idol is coming back in March 2018.
