What's the Difference between the 1995/96 Government Shutdowns and the 2013 Shutdown?

An article I was reading today was written in January of 1996 when I was staff writer for the FlowerPlex PipeLine Newspaper by Doe Royal the editor of the newspaper. The article could have been written yesterday; about the government shutdown of this month instead it was during the government shutdown(s) of President Clinton's presidency, of which there were two.

This concerns me, because the GOP is all set to shut down our government again in February or March, and at what cost, another 24 billion?

I removed the article from the album where I had pasted it in 1996. This was often my habit, when reading a particularly interesting article, such as the one I am holding in my hand, which could have been written yesterday and would have been apropos for what is going on today.

Strangely enough it was not just the article that Doe had written, that gave me chills, it was also the fact that I had just read Doe Royal’s obituary. It felt almost as if she wanted me to find her article and write it.

The article was written about the government shutdown during President Clinton's presidency.

Doe had written in the article, that every time she and her husband Carl talked about the government employee layoffs, in regards to the Congressmen who shut down the government Carl would always respond with ‘let ‘em get a real job.’

What entitles government employees to a guaranteed regular paycheck; you and I don’t have such a guarantee, Doe wrote.

Let’s talk about the real world. Perhaps they would like to trade places with the AT&T employees. (AT&T had a huge layoff during one of the two times of the Clinton government shutdown(s).)

If your employer runs short of money and has to work out a funding agreement, chances are he’s going to lay you off. Suddenly you don’t have any paycheck.

Additionally you won’t know if you even have a job until the employer corrects his funding situation, if indeed he does.

What is it about government employees which entitles them to a guaranteed job and pay check; why is it that your treatment doesn’t extend to them as well? After all you and I help pay their salaries.

Congressmen, and Senators are suppose to be working for the American people. Are they?

It is our money you know, and I don’t know about you but I don’t work in order to pay my inferred obligation to everyone else in the country. If I don’t make the decision, I am not responsible for the outcome

I’m sure not responsible because the President chooses to veto the budget we, the majority, indicated we wanted when we cast our vote in 1994. The man needs to come-to and listen to what we, the workers, want to do with our money.

This was the gist of Doe's article.

Maybe it was the fact that Doe Royal was a staunch Republican that surprised me and compelled me to save the article.

I am not sure about Carl, which political Party he believed in, but they, did not seem to agree on political issues.

Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House during the 1995 and 96 government shutdown(s) and John Boehner is the Speaker of the House during the current government shutdown.

According to an article in The Washington Post by Glenn Kessler, The Truth Behind the Rhetoric.

On December 7, 1995, after President Bill Clinton vetoed the budget spending bill presented by the Gingrich lead Republican Congress over the funding of Medicare, Social Security, and education the Republican controlled Congress shut down the government.

Per Kessler, the current Speaker of the House, John Boehner was the number 4 Republican in the House leadership during the 1995-96 government shutdowns, and Kessler believes that those government shutdowns deeply affected the Current Speaker.

When I hear Ted Cruz ranting and raving about what they are demanding:

• Defund the already funded Obama Care (i.e. The Affordable Care Act)
• Approve the Keystone XL Pipeline (Q. Does he get a kickback from his native country?)
• Deep and dangerous cuts to Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and SNAP.

Q. Do you believe that Cruz is loyal to the United States?

Q. Do you really think if you pay a blackmailer's ransom demands, that is the end of it and they will not ask for anything more?
